Sometimes, strange-sounding legends can have some truth in them, and can even lead to important scientific discoveries. Share this Civil War related story with your students, have them answer the focus questions, and lead them into a discussion on microbes and the unseen world, infectious disease/health/medicine, or the importance of observation and an open mind when it comes to science research.
