BOB HIRSHON (host):
Can apples fight cancer? I’m Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.

New research conducted on lab animals suggests compounds in apples may help fight breast cancer and stave off Alzheimers Disease. In the first study, a food scientist at Cornell found fresh apple extracts inhibited mammary tumors in rats. The rats getting the apple extract not only had fewer tumors overall, but those that they did have were smaller and less malignant.

In other research at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, scientists found that mice fed the equivalent of two glasses of apple juice each day produced fewer beta-amyloid proteins than did other mice. Beta-amyloids are associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. The teams point out that these findings have not yet been replicated in humans. I’m Bob Hirshon for AAAS, the Science Society.
