Podcast: Play in new window

BOB HIRSHON (host):
A web-based catalogue of life. I’m Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.

A new internet tool could revolutionize the field of biology. It’s a website called the Encyclopedia of Life, a comprehensive repository of information about every species on earth. Anyone can visit the website for accurate information about a species, from its physical description and geographic distribution to its conservation status and even its DNA sequence. Biologist Gary Borisy is the director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

GARY BORISY (Marine Biological Laboratory):
What we hope for the Encyclopedia of life to provide is one-stop shopping for information about all species, all life on earth.

HIRSHON:
He says the site will eventually provide extensive information on more than one million species. Check out the Encyclopedia of Life at www.eol.org. I’m Bob Hirshon for AAAS, the science society.
